Purpose: The teachings of the Buddha were compiled into two pitakas, the Vinaya Pitaka and the Sutta Pitaka.

President: Sabakmir (Sarvakamani)
Reign: During the reign of Kalashoka (Shishunaga dynasty).
Purpose: To resolve the differences regarding discipline, Buddhism was divided into two parts, established and Mahasanghika.

Location: Patliputra
Time: 251 BC
President: Moggaliputtatis
Reign: During the period of Ashoka (Maurya dynasty).
Purpose: An attempt was made to provide stability to Buddhism by proposing strict rules against Sangh distinction. The religious texts were finally edited and the third pitaka, the Abhidhammapitaka, was added.
